In June, 1942, Doctor Hector P. Garcia enlisted in the Army, where he joined the ranks of thousands of other Mexican-Americans who served in the U.S. armed services.

After brief stints in the infantry and engineers, Dr. Garcia served as a surgeon, working in six European combat zones.

In his spare time, Dr. Hector P. Garcia studied languages, teaching himself French, Italian, German and Arabic.
