"MAPA Award" from the Mexican American Physician's Association for Outstanding Service to Hispanics throughout the U.S. presented to Dr. Garcia.
"Distinguished Lifetime Service Award" from the National Association of Hispanic Journalists presented to Dr. Garcia.
"Equestrian Order of Pope Gregory the Great" from Pope John Paul II presented to Dr. Garcia.
"Maclovio Barraza Award" given by the National Council of La Raza for exemplary leadership in promoting the interest of Hispanics in the U.S. presented to Dr. Garcia.
1991
CCSU President Dr. Robert Furgason gives corpus Christi State University's first "Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters Degree" to Dr. Garcia.
1992
Dr. Hector P. Garcia donates his papers to the then Corpus Christi State University Bell Library.
North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is reached.
1993
Bill Clinton becomes President.
Corpus Christi Memorial Medical Center names its new Indigent Health Clinic the "Dr. Hector P. Garcia Health Center."
1996
March 8 - Dr. Hector P. Garcia closes his medical office on Bright Street.
June 28 - The Dr. Hector P. Garcia Plaza at Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi is formally dedicated, with a 9-foot statue of the honoree.
July 26 - Dr. Hector P. Garcia dies surrounded by friends and family.
July 28 - President Bill Clinton issues statement saying, "Dr. Garcia was a real American hero. We should honor him best by committing ourselves to continue the work of his life. He was a remarkable man."
1998
The United States Congress honors Dr. Hector P. Garcia, by passing a bill that makes the American G.I. Forum a congressionally chartered veterans organization.
1999
Dr. Hector P. Garcia's image is placed on the U.S. Treasury $75 I Bond series honoring great Americans. Others appearing on the new I Bonds are: Helen Keller, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Chief Joseph, General George C. Marshall, Albert Einstein, Marian Anderson, and Spark M. Matsunaga.
2002
KEDT-TV Public Television produces the television documentary Justice for my People: The Dr. Hector P. Garcia Story.
